Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information stopdigitaldrift.com collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. This site exists to share information about the book Digital Drift by Jeffrey T. Erickson and to connect readers with booksellers.
In this policy, "we," "us," and "our" refer to Jeffrey T. Erickson and the operators of this site. "You" means anyone who visits stopdigitaldrift.com.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
You can browse this site without giving us any personal information. We collect what you choose to send us, which may include:
- Your name and email address, if you email us, submit our media inquiry form, or sign up for updates about the book.
- The contents of any message you send, including media and speaking inquiries.
- Your outlet, role, deadline, or similar details, if you provide them in the media inquiry form.
- Any other details you volunteer in correspondence.
Media inquiries submitted through this site are forwarded to Julie Ward, publicist for Digital Drift, so she can respond on the author's behalf.
Our media inquiry form and our email list are handled by Brevo, a third-party email and forms platform. What you submit is stored on Brevo's systems so we can respond to you and, where you have asked for it, send you updates. Brevo may also record technical details such as your IP address and the time of submission. See Brevo's privacy policy for how they handle it.
Information collected automatically
When you visit, our web host and any analytics tools we use may record technical information, including:
- IP address and general location derived from it (typically city or region, not a precise address).
- Browser type, operating system, device type, and screen size.
- Pages viewed, time spent, links and buttons clicked, and scroll depth.
- The referring website or campaign that brought you here.
- Date and time of your request.
Information from third parties
If you interact with our content on a social or advertising platform, that platform may give us aggregated, non-identifying reporting about that activity. We do not buy personal information about you from data brokers.
2. Cookies and tracking technologies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. Similar technologies include pixels, tags, local storage, and software development kits. We group them as follows:
| Category | Purpose | Can you refuse? |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Serve the page, keep it secure, remember your privacy choices. | No — the site cannot function without these. |
| Analytics | Understand which pages and links people use, so we can improve the site. | Yes. |
| Advertising | Measure ad campaigns and show relevant ads on other sites. | Yes. |
You can control cookies through your browser settings, including blocking or deleting them. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site from working. Where the law requires it, we ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies, and you can withdraw that consent at any time.
Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" signal. There is no common industry standard for responding to it, so we do not respond to Do Not Track. We do honour the Global Privacy Control signal where it applies.
3. Analytics
We use analytics services to understand how people find and use this site — for example, which retailer links get clicked and which sections people read. These services set cookies and collect the technical information described above. We use the results in aggregate to improve the site; we do not use them to identify you personally.
If we use Google Analytics, you can opt out across all sites using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Google's handling of this data is described in Google's privacy policy.
4. Advertising and retargeting
We may run advertising for the book on search engines and social platforms. To measure whether those ads work, and to show follow-up ads to people who have already visited, we may place advertising pixels on this site. These pixels can allow a platform to recognise your browser or device on other sites and services.
You can limit interest-based advertising through your device settings and through industry opt-out tools such as the Digital Advertising Alliance and the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance. Opting out stops personalised ads; it does not stop ads entirely.
Under some state privacy laws, using advertising pixels counts as "sharing" or "selling" personal information, even when no money changes hands. See California residents for how to opt out.
5. Email and marketing
If you give us your email address to receive news about the book, we use it to send updates about Digital Drift, related writing, and events. We use Brevo to send and manage these messages, which means your address is stored on Brevo's systems on our behalf.
Marketing emails may include tracking that tells us whether a message was opened and which links were clicked. We use this to judge whether the emails are useful.
Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe at any time. You may also email us directly to be removed. We will still reply to messages you send us, since that correspondence is not marketing.
We do not sell your email address.
6. Bookseller and affiliate links
This site links to third-party booksellers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Bookshop.org. Some of those are affiliate links, which means the publisher or the author may earn a commission on qualifying purchases. This does not change the price you pay.
Following a link takes you to that retailer's website, where their privacy policy applies instead of ours. We do not receive your payment details, shipping address, or order contents, and we have no control over how those companies handle your information.
7. Third-party services
This site relies on outside providers to operate:
- Web hosting. Our host stores the site's files and keeps standard server logs for security and troubleshooting.
- Fonts. Typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts. When your browser requests them, Google receives your IP address.
- Forms and email. Brevo provides our media inquiry form and sends our email updates, and stores what you submit so we can respond.
- Content delivery and security. Cloudflare hosts and delivers this site and filters malicious traffic, which involves processing request data such as your IP address and browser details.
- Spam protection. Our media inquiry form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a person, not an automated program, is sending it. When you open the form, Turnstile collects technical information about your browser and device to make that check. It does not use advertising cookies. Cloudflare's handling of this data is described in the Turnstile privacy addendum.
These providers may process information on our behalf and are expected to protect it and use it only for the services they provide to us.
8. How we use information
We use the information described above to:
- Operate, maintain, and secure the site.
- Reply to your questions, media requests, and speaking inquiries.
- Send book updates you have asked to receive.
- Understand which content and links people use, and improve the site accordingly.
- Measure and improve advertising for the book.
- Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and technical problems.
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our rights.
9. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information for money. We share it only in these situations:
- Service providers. Hosting, analytics, email delivery, and advertising partners who process information on our behalf.
- Publicity and publishing partners. Media inquiries go to the book's publicist so she can reply. We may also coordinate with the publisher or distributor where a request requires it.
- Legal reasons. When we believe disclosure is required by law, or is necessary to protect rights, safety, or property.
- Business transfers. If the site or its assets change hands, information may transfer with them, subject to this policy.
10. How long we keep information
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes described here, or as long as the law requires. In practice: server logs are kept for a short period for security; analytics data is retained according to the settings of the analytics tool; email subscriber records are kept until you unsubscribe or ask to be deleted; and correspondence is kept as long as it is useful for the relationship.
11. Security
This site is served over an encrypted HTTPS connection, and we take reasonable steps to protect information we hold. No website or method of transmission is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Please do not send sensitive information such as financial details by email.
12. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights:
- Access. Ask what personal information we hold about you.
- Correction. Ask us to fix information that is wrong or incomplete.
- Deletion. Ask us to delete information we hold about you.
- Portability. Ask for a copy in a portable format.
- Objection and restriction. Object to certain processing, or ask us to limit it.
- Withdraw consent. Where we rely on consent, withdraw it at any time.
- Opt out of marketing. Unsubscribe from any marketing email.
To exercise any of these, email screenguyspeaker@gmail.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting, and we will respond within the time the applicable law allows. We will not treat you differently for exercising a privacy right.
13. California residents
If you live in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended gives you rights to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to delete it, to correct it, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of it. Under that law, using advertising or analytics cookies can count as sharing even though we receive no payment.
To opt out, email us at the address in Contact us, use any "Your Privacy Choices" control offered on this site, or send a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser. You may authorise an agent to make a request for you. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.
14. EEA and UK residents
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process personal information on these legal bases: your consent (for non-essential cookies and marketing email); our legitimate interests in running, securing, and improving the site and promoting the book; and legal obligation where a law requires it.
You have the rights listed in section 12, and you may lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. In the UK that is the Information Commissioner's Office.
15. International transfers
We are based in the United States, and our service providers may store or process information in the United States or elsewhere. Privacy laws in those countries may differ from those where you live. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses for these transfers.
16. Children
This site is written for a general adult audience and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email us and we will delete it.
The book discusses children's screen habits, but it is written for the adults who care for them.
17. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site changes or as the law requires. The revised version will be posted here with a new "last updated" date. If the changes are significant, we will make that clear on the site.
18. Contact us
Questions, requests, or complaints about this policy can be sent to screenguyspeaker@gmail.com.
